What's for Homework?

I'm sure that a number of students have been saying they have finished all their Homework or have none, when asked by parents. I have been observing how students have been managing their Homework assignments. Quite a number have good organisational and self motivational skills, while others need to develop these further. We will talk about this during the interviews.

Spelling - Spelling words need to be written in the diary every week. (Students choose their won words based on pretests, lists of core words, key words in books they are reading, errors in spelling sentences and written language books.
Parents are asked to check the list of words written into the diary as sometimes they are copied incorrectly. Words need to be spelt to someone at home. Students need to record this in their diary and ask a parent to sign off to say that this has been done.

Reading - All students should be reading for 20-30 minutes per night on average. The Premier's Reading Challenge must be completed by the end of THIS term. Students have been asked to read at least 1 book per week in order to complete the Challenge by the due date. (the end of the term)

Maths - Choose 1 of the following.
1. Do 2 of the set activities in Studyladder online - all students have passwords. (I have been checking this and only 3 students have been doing this regularly.
or if this is not possible -
2. Collect a maths sheet on Monday from the teacher and return by Thursday.
ALSO
Every student needs to focus on 1 particular times table. Most have chosen x9
There are 4 levels of mastery.
1. Say your chosen table out loud to someone at home (from 1x9=9 to 12x9=108)
2. Say your table backwards (12x9=108 to 1x9=9)
3. Say your table in a mixed up order ( 2x9=18, 7x9=63 etc)
4. Say your table as division facts (9 divided into 9 = 1, 18 divided into 9 = 2 etc)

Other - Finish any of the work not completed in class during the week. Look at the list on the white board and write your list of work that needs to be completed in your diary. This work could include History or Geography, Health, Media Studies Art Skills,.
Students are also encouraged to work on the PIP (Personal Interest Project) and Journal Writing revising the features of Narratives and Persuasive Writing.

Homework Week 4

Apart from Reading, Spelling and Times tables we need to start getting ready for our Living Museum Display. We will be doing this on Wednesday after our long run. For the display we need to bring along things that will tell others about our hobbies, interests and sports or musical instruments we play. We will need to display these on our desk. We need to make sure that everything has a label and a description. We will get a note to take home about this on Tuesday.

Year 6s also need to complete the Carbon Footprint Sheet.
Science - everyone needs to complete the Energy Audit Sheet.

Homework Due on Thursdays

The Home Work routine for all of the Middle Years Classes is to complete the Homework given out on Monday by that Thursday.
We will discuss this in greater detail at the Acquaintance Night and then publish it on our Blog in a new section called Documents.
Students are starting to get the hang of the new routines and most are using their diaries well. I usually check the diaries on a weekly basis so that I can identify students who need help with organisation. If parents have written a note in the diary, I ask that the diary is placed on my desk in the morning by the student.
Students now have Studyladder usernames and passwords. They were glued into their diaries in the Notes section today.
In maths we have been discussing numbers and place value and have used the terms - tens, hundreds, thousands, tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands, millions. Some students have worked on numbers as large as trillions.
The Maths websites below will help them to consolidate this work.

Tuesday, 3 February 2015

Today during our Maths lesson in the computer room we used the following websites.
Students can use these at home too. The website addresses were shortened at the goo.gl website.
